Brotherhood Meeting
Meeting with Erna Steenken July 15, 1934 (evening)
Eberhard Arnold reads out a statement issued by the members of the Ziegelwald settlement.
Eberhard: (to Erna Steenken,): The other day you spoke to me so clearly about the water fountain, the question of body, soul, and spirit, and of unity in the church. You have taken a brave stand all along. Now you are looking for complete clarity. You see, here is a circle of weak people. What is it that makes you wish to be united with them in life and in death?
Erna: I often have to think of the terrible spirit of destruction that is rampant in Germany, with people killing each other. That is not the spirit of love; in that way no life can come into being. To live together through the love of Christ, to understand one another through the Spirit, to wait together for the one thing and to strive to take the message out to people--that, I feel, is what is greatest. It is increasingly clear to me that this comes to expression in the church community; I feel that I, too, must be part of it and thereby come to understand the meaning of life. The way to help is by showing love to people who are suffering from violence, as is the case in Germany right now. So I would like to work for the cause here because that seems to me what is greatest and because Christ wants us to love all men, even our enemies. I would like to be one of you, and that is my request to you.
Eberhard: With our whole heart we most definitely want to grant that to our Erna. We want to talk over how we can find for Erna a form that expresses the wholehearted stand she takes. It is a joy for us to hear Erna say, in her own words, what is on all of our hearts. We want to see how, in view of your young age, we can best express that you are wholly one of us.
Gerhard Wiegand: I feel very sorry and ashamed for having been so weak and complacent in the face of our great task. I did not take as clear a stand to S. as I should have done; I did not always express what we want with our whole life. I have now come to feel what my lack of responsibility toward S. and our whole life actually means. A new beginning is needed. I want to give myself wholly to the cause, want to do my part in what the church community is aiming at in its attitude to the world's distress, so that something may flow out also through me. I want to open myself anew and be ready for the cause.
Eberhard: What you have so candidly confessed just now has to be expressed in vigorous mental work, in an intense concern with the subject, so that you become a thinker and proclaimer, someone that knows what these things are all about. You must get down to work and let your head and mind get involved in everything you experience inwardly.

Der Wortführer zu Erna Steenken:
Du hast Dich neulich mir gegenüber so klar ausgesprochen bei der Springbrunnenfrage, bei der Frage über Körper, Seele und Geist und der Einheit in der Gemeinde. Du hast Dich tapfer gehalten die Zeit über. Du möchtest nun völlige Klarheit. Du siehst, hier sind schwache Menschen. Was bewegt Dich, dass du Dich auf Tod und Leben mit ihnen verbinden willst?
Erna:
Ich muss oft denken, wie in Deutschland ein furchtbarer Zerstörungsgeist herrscht, wo sich die Menschen totschlagen. Das ist kein Liebesgeist, so kann kein Leben entstehen. Wenn man durch die Christusliebe zusammenlebt und sich durch den Geist miteinander versteht und auf das Eine wartet, gemeinsam, und es zu den Menschen zu bringen sucht, - das seh ich als das Grösste an. Ich erkenne immer mehr, dass das in der Gemeinde zu Ausdruck kommt und dass ich da auch sein muss, dass ich dadurch den Sinn des Lebens erkenne, dass man so, indem man den andern Menschen, die grade wie in Deutschland jetzt so unter der Gewalt leiden, die Liebe bringt, helfen kann. So möchte ich an dem Werk mithelfen, weil ich es als das Grösste empfinde und weil Christus wollte dass wir alle Menschen, auch die Feinde, lieben. So ist es meine Bitte an euch, dass ich gern dazugehören möchte.
Der Wortführer:
Wir wollen das aufs Bestimmteste unserer Erna von ganzem Herzen gewähren. Wir wollen es besprechen, dass wir für Erna eine Form finden, die ausdrückt, dass sie mit ganzem Herzen zur Sache steht. Wir freuen uns, dass Erna mit eigene Worten ausdrückt, was uns allen am Herzen liegt. Wir wollen sehen, welches der Beste Ausdruck für ihr jugendliches Alter ist, dass Du ganz zu uns gehörst.
Gerhard W:
Ich bin sehr beschämt und betrübt, dass ich gegenüber der grossen Aufgabe so schwach und nachgiebig gewesen bin. Ich habe mich gegen S. nicht so klar verhalten, wie ich es hätte müssen, ich habe nicht immer ausgedrückt, was wir wollen mit unserem ganzen Leben. Die Verantwortungslosigkeit gegen S. und unser ganzes Leben – ich habe jetzt gespürt, was das bedeutet hat. Einen neuen Anfang zu machen ist nötig. Es geht mir um einen neuen Anfang, dass ich mich ganz in die Sache stelle und dazu beitrage, was die Gemeinde will mit ihrer Stellung der Welt und der Not gegenüber, dass auch durch mich etwas fliesst. Ich möchte mich von neuem öffnen und bereithalten für die Sache.
Der Wortführer:
Es muss sich in starker geistiger Arbeit ausdrücken, was Du eben so treuherzig bekannt hast, in einer intensiven Beschäftigung mit dem Gegenstand, dass Du ein Denker und Verkünder wirst, einer, der weiss um was es geht bei diesen Dingen. Du musst gründlich arbeiten, dass Kopf und Geist beteiligt sind an allem, was Du innerlich erlebst.
